on Rebgong
Rebgong (热贡) refers to a cultural region located along the Longwu River in Tongren City, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province.
The name “Rebgong” means “golden valley” in Tibetan.
"Reviews on Rebgong" is an interactive art installation exploring and showcasing the multicultural and multi-religious aspects of the Rebgong region.
In this work, I invited 50 local residents and travelers from different ethnicities, religious beliefs, and social backgrounds to share their most profound and typical impressions and evaluations of Rebgong through paintings and writings.
The installation uses the colors of Tibetan prayer flags, symbolizing the sky, clouds, fire, water, and earth, represented on colorful acrylic panels arranged in a door-shaped wooden frame.
This design guides visitors to walk freely through the space, experiencing the diversity and fluidity of cultures. This format aims to provoke reflection and dialogue on cultural biases and perceptions, thereby enhancing public respect and appreciation for cultural diversity
This project was made possible with the support of The Great You – The First Tongren Country Art Festival and the Rebgong Art Center in Guomari Village.
The Great You – The First Tongren Country Art Festival brings contemporary art into dialogue with rich local traditions, landscapes, and communities. As an important platform for artistic exchange and cultural revitalization, the festival invites artists to engage with the everyday lives and heritage of the region.
Rebgong Art Center, as a long-term local initiative, supports artistic collaboration, craft research, and experimental community-based work.
Both institutions are committed to reimagining how traditional cultures connect with contemporary practices.
